Hand applied onto Fabriano Paper.

The X-rays look beyond the surface, yet creating prints where we apply chemicals to differing surfaces makes for an intriguing dichotomy. Alongside this dialogue the viewer also receives a poignant narrative regarding the current fuel crisis with the aid of some modern urban humour.

...and... sorry but no Willy Wonker x-rays available!

Nick and his wife Zoe spent four days in Moscow during the opening and the private viewing. They had an amazing time and were completely overwhelmed with the fantastic hospitality they received. A massive thank you to all those involved.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Over 20 X-rays or perhaps more appropriately, radiographs of fashion and haute couture images were displayed at the gallery and a wedding scene was recreated in X-ray <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">with the bride groom and bridesmaid's outfits represented in life-size.
La Vallee Village promoted the exhibition in each of its boutiques and shops and the show is proving popular with shoppers interested in seeing the fabric and construction that goes into the garments that they wear.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Limited edition prints mounted here on hangers and hung from clothing rails are also available to buy at La Vallee. The three prints depict a sequined disco bag, a bottle of perfume in a box and a subtly colured X-ray of a pair of sunglasses. These are limited to editions of 50.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Nick's renowned studies of botanical subjects are represented in a stunning triptych of an amarylis, ice cap and dendrobium alongside a larger print entitled Solo Iris. A unique wedding scene provides the centre-piece of the exhibition with life-size X-rays of the bride and groom. The tiny bridesmaid is there too, standing alongside the happy couple. Look out for the drunken auntie, throwing some shapes on the dancefloor!

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Local entertainment comes in the form of a <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">native <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Austrian accordian player dressed in <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">traditional <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">lederhose with a detailed and intricate accordian strapped to his chest.

These works continue the musical theme displayed in the X-ray of the accordian. Produced by using perhaps the oldest methods of photography, namely plate photography, three brass instruments: a cornet, french horn and saxophone have been handprinted onto glass and sit in ornate frames with the image casting an intriguing shadow onto a recessed backing. These pieces echo the unique physical properties of X-ray film.
Often this scientific study of painted works confirms the suspicions or theories of the art historians who have only been able to view the completed piece. They can see the result that the artist has arrived at yet remain just as interested in the working processes, revisions and blind alleys that have formed the masterpiece.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">When paintings are subjected to examination by X-rays, often an entirely different landscape is revealed. The canvas itself can be scrutinised and historians can pinpoint the age and geographical source of the canvas material to aid in identifying the provenance of the artwork. The quality of the canvas and the paints and materials used can be assessed too, giving an indication as to the original colours and strokes of the paintings thus helping to guage their integrity and resilience. The restoration of many artworks would not be possible without X-ray examination and most fascinatingly of all, there have been a number of amazing discoveries of works by the old masters that have been painted over or placed behind panels and which only the power of X-rays have fully revealed.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Fascinated by the process of X-ray and fine art painting, Nick managed to avail himself of one of Van Gogh's Sunflower images and - no expense spared - treated the canvas to a long and powerful dose of ionising radiation.
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The results were somewhat of a revelation. Each brushstroke and swathe of paint was exposed in fuller detail showing the densities and consitency of the media. Furthermore, the canvas material was vividly displayed with the weave of the fabric clearly discernible. The X-ray itself became a work of art.

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">This picture shows a detail from the Sunflowers painting of the earthenware vase. The broad, thick brushstrokes look hasty and rough but you can see the tremendous expression in each stroke as well as truly appreciating the thickness and application of the paint.

Stripped of all the expressive colour of the original the X-ray of the painting is eerie and looks colder and more austere. The over all impression that the X-ray gives is to take a familiar artwork (an icon of modern European art) and produce a distancing or alienating effect. We recognise the joyous, energetic original piece but the unfamiliar rendering that the X-ray process creates is unsettling and intriguing.
The viewer can appreciate the rifle as a purely functional, precision-machined object yet the stark symbolism and menace the image conveys is potent. The expressionistic sprays of crimson ink accentuate this menace and are a chaotic counterpoint to the regular linear steel forms of the gun.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Since the inception of photography, artists and image-makers have experimented with photograms, chemical, plate and film manipulations and the Shadowcatchers main exhibit celebrates five contemporary exponents, each whose work is unique in its own right. The five artists are: Floris Neusüss (b. 1937), Pierre Cordier(b. 1933), Garry Fabian Miller (b. 1957), Susan Derges (b.1955) and Adam Fuss (b. 1961). Puffa Jacket is aside from the main exhibit which is mounted adjacent to the main entrance hall. If you seek out room 38a on the ground floor the piece is exhibited as the most recent example of British contemporary, camera-less photography.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">The team at Radar Studio enjoyed a day out to the V&A, where they enjoyed the Shadowcatchers exhibit as well as the satisfaction of seeing the Puffa Jacket piece mounted and displayed alongside other fascinating works.
