Radiographie De La Mode

The opening and private view for the exhibition, Radiographie De La Mode at Espace, La Vallee Village was held on Saturday the 19th of March.

Over 20 X-rays or perhaps more appropriately, radiographs of fashion and haute couture images were displayed at the gallery and a wedding scene was recreated in X-ray with the bride groom and bridesmaid's outfits represented in life-size.

A number of limited edition Tee-Shirts are available too which depict a racy basque, a DJ with heaphones and microphone and for the kids, a teddy bear - all sporting Nick's signature. La Vallee Village promoted the exhibition in each of its boutiques and shops and the show is proving popular with shoppers interested in seeing the fabric and construction that goes into the garments that they wear.


Limited edition prints mounted here on hangers and hung from clothing rails are also available to buy at La Vallee. The three prints depict a sequined disco bag, a bottle of perfume in a box and a subtly colured X-ray of a pair of sunglasses. These are limited to editions of 50.

X-RAY at Atelier Jungwirth

This weekend the private view for Nick's show at Atelier Jungwirth in Graz, will be held. These pictures demonstrate the fantastic space at the gallery with the images hung and looking magnificent in situ.

Thanks to the formidable efforts of Christian Jungwirth, Birgit Enge and all at the gallery for instigating this exhibition and making a great contribution to support all the hours of work, creating the artworks at Radar Studio.

Opening at Atelier Jungwirth, Graz

The exhibition, Nick Veasey: X-ray will open at Atelier Jungwirth, Graz, Austria on March 15th . A new selection of art works  have been produced with several themes represented in the show.

There are a number of pieces which are X-ray studies of marine life including radiographs of a West Indian Sea Egg and a Matha's Sea Urchin. These are complemented by smaller pieces showing the shells of a sand dollar, pearl shell and a crown of thorns sea star. 

Nick's renowned studies of botanical subjects are represented in a stunning triptych of an amarylis, ice cap and dendrobium alongside a larger print entitled Solo Iris. A unique wedding scene provides the centre-piece of the exhibition with life-size X-rays of the bride and groom. The tiny bridesmaid is there too, standing alongside the happy couple. Look out for the drunken auntie, throwing some shapes on the dancefloor!

Local entertainment comes in the form of a native Austrian accordian player dressed in  traditional lederhose with a detailed and intricate accordian strapped to his chest.

The most exciting and unique pieces in the exhibition are 3 new works which have been hand-made at Radar Studio's darkroom. These works continue the musical theme displayed in the X-ray of the accordian. Produced by using perhaps the oldest methods of photography, namely plate photography, three brass instruments: a cornet, french horn and saxophone have been handprinted onto glass and sit in ornate frames with the image casting an intriguing shadow onto a recessed backing. These pieces echo the unique physical properties of X-ray film.

Nick Veasey Limited Edition Prints

Provocative and captivating screenprints are now being produced here at Radar Studio. An intriguing yet disturbing X-ray study of an M4 assault rifle - the standard issue battle weapon of the US Army is available as a limited edition silkscreen print. 

The piece, entitled "The Beauty of Death' is embellished with blood effect paint and the silkscreening process entails that each print in the edition of 25 is unique. The silkscreen is hand printed with metallic silver inks at Nick Veasey’s studio onto Fabriano paper at size 70 x 100cm (27.5 x 39.4”).

The M4 is carried by the US Army in combat zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan and its immediately recognisable design has become an icon of military might mirroring foreign policy. The Marine Corps motto is  "Every Marine is a rifleman." and the M4 is their trusted comrade. In the field, you had better not be caught without your rifle!

Despite being designed to kill and maim the X-ray elicits the elegant and functional mechanisms of the gun: a magazine full of surprisingly small bullets; a long hollow barrell protected by a sculpted, heat-proof foregrip; the intricate lenses and optics of the gunsight. The viewer can appreciate the rifle as a purely functional, precision-machined object yet the stark symbolism and menace the image conveys is potent. The expressionistic sprays of crimson ink accentuate this menace and are a chaotic counterpoint to the regular linear steel forms of the gun.

Priced at GBP £350 / USD $500 / EURO €400 each print is signed and numbered in pencil, and comes with a certificate of authenticity and artist label.

Art with Swiss Precision

You can see the healthy turnout and audience reaction to the arrival of X-ray art pieces at Dubinsky Fine Arts in Zurich. Thomas Dubinsky had meticulously planned a fine display of Veasey originals and much appreciation, wonder and discussion was generated by the works exhibited. The setting was perfect and anyone looking for a rewarding experience of thought-provoking X-ray studies should waste no time and proceed directly to Dubinsky Fine Arts.

X-ray Exhibition at Dubinsky Fine Arts, Zurich

The fine  city of Zurich is now the location for the first exhibition of Nick's X-ray art in Switzerland at Dubinsky Fine Arts in Zollikon, Zurich. 

Nick attended the private view on September 9th and is grateful to Thomas Dubinsky and the people at Dubinsky Fine Arts for mounting a spectacular show which had a fantastic turnout.

Ich bin ein Berliner

We have just carefully loaded a consignment of the X-ray diasecs - or should that be Roentgen diasecs - for shipping to the amazing city of Berlin where they will be exhibited at 21galleries in Charlottenberg.  

There are a number of marine and oceanic images that were presented in editions in the  exhibition at Knokke in Belgium and were such a hit by the seaside there as well as award-winning editions such as Kylie's Knickers and the A0 edition of the Mini which is represented on the poster announcing the exhibition.

The show X-ray -  Die Schönheit des Verborgenen begins on the 27th of May and runs right through until the end of July at 21galleries by Udo Walz, Fasanenstrasse 37, 10719 Berlin.

Ola Señor and Howdy Partner...

I am a tired yet largely contented man. Largely contented because I am cursing the volcanic belchings of that unpronounceable slice of Iceland that has kept me grounded in the USA for most of the last three days. I had been in the amazing state of New Mexico, opening an exhibition, Nick Veasey: X-ray at the Klaudia Marr Gallery in Santa Fe and I had a very enjoyable time learning about the art scene in the city which is apparently a major destination for international collectors and tourists with a passion for art.

Santa Fe is a relatively small city but it has a rich heritage in American arts and culture. The most notable artist that is associated with the city is Georgia O'Keefe and the Klaudia Marr Gallery nestles in Johnson Street right next to the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. I took some time to study the works in their natural setting and I was actually surprised with the parallels between my X-ray work and the fantastic paintings of O'Keefe. I loved her studies of plants, flowers and botanical forms; subjects which I have been exploring with my X-ray machines for years.  It was astonishing to juxtapose O'Keefe's study of an Iris with my own X-ray Solo Iris or even her painting of a Rams Head which I had paralleled in my own work several years ago. One of the most striking things about her work is the adventurous use of bold colour and as my X-rays are developed from monochrome originals I am thinking of producing some colouring experiments when it comes to applying tones in the computer. O'Keefe has definitely been an inspiration.

The exhibit in Santa Fe came hot on the heels of a very exciting gallery show at Galeria Tagomago in Barcelona. I was overwhelmed by the interest in my work and I welcomed the many questions and the curiosity that the pictures seemed to generate. The launch was great and my hosts Vincenc and Valerie were generous and well-organised to a fault. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of Spanish media outlets that came to observe the exhibition and ask me questions about my work and the process behind the artworks. I ended up conducting interviews with well over a dozen journalists and publications which was excellently coordinated by Galeria Tagomago - thanks guys!

You can see that I got involved  with the mounting of the X-rays and the Mini car, which is huge looks fantastic on the wall of the gallery allowing a lot of natural light to fall on the pictures and reveal them in their full glory. The exhibition at Galeria Tagomago runs until the 12th of June.

Klaudia Marr Gallery, Santa Fe

Another intriguing exhibition occurs hot on the heels of the Barcelona event but this time Nick will be leaving European shores to open a show of works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA at the Klaudia Marr Gallery located in downtown Santa Fe adjacent to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. The gallery offers a new opportunity for Nick as it will be an interesting chance to see how his work is received in an environment distinct from the art circles of the major east and west coast cities. Besides, he has always fancied oiling up his chaps and taking to the saddle in a ten-gallon hat, to earn his spurs as a gen-u-wine cowboy ...

A varied selection of images will be presented including the award-winning piece entitled Kylie's Knickers which narrowly fell short of the judges final decision for the Lucie Award for International Photographer of the Year...perhaps they weren't Neighbours fans. Nick's X-rays of clothing and fabrics have won many admirers and commissions from the fashion and couture world and there are further works in the exhibit that show the fine craftsmanship in a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes as well as an elegant female leg poised seductively in a stiletto shoe. A smaller sized edition of the Mini will be represented here as well as another vehicle in the form of Nick's Bulldozer piece.

New Exhibition - TagoMago, Barcelona

We are in the process of carefully packaging pictures for a new exhibition beginning this month at Galeria TagoMago, located in the culturally vibrant city of Barcelona. The exhibition: X-ray - Nick Veasey, runs from the 29th of April until June the 12th 2010 featuring more than 30 works created in the X-ray lab at Radar Studio and produced as stunning C-Type Diasec prints, ranging in size and subject from some fascinating studies of Orchids and Dendrobium flowers through to the notable life-size presentation of an Austin Mini, captured in spectacular detail by Nick's X-ray equipment.

The Mini image took hours of re-engineering with individual components carefully exposed to the optimum amounts of radiation, then the large number of films were painstakingly scanned and reconstructed inside a computer, straining with processing the life-size dimensions of the car. Further toil and careful crafting have yielded a mesmerising result. This is not just an image for budding mechanics or classic Mini aficionados; the observer could spend hours of careful scrutiny admiring the engineering brilliance of Alex Issigonis and his team or they could step back and admire the overarching subtlety and aesthetic wonder of a British design classic.
